Spoilers on Hadashi de Bara wo Fume (Stepping on Roses Barefoot)
It would seem that what started as something to compile case digests has become a platform for my hobbies. Mayhaps I should change the name of this blog.
I just finished reading the manga series Hadashi de Bara wo Fume (Stepping on Roses Barefoot) and I want to spoil everything to the curious.
...Oh wait. Wikipedia already did that. Oh well.
Soichiro Ashida and Nozomu Iijuin are best friends. They both are heirs to their families' conglomerates.
One day, Nozomu gave some money to a girl named Sumi. Soichiro then had an idea that Sumi might just be Nozomu's type and started a whole operation to get Iijuin's family to give an unlimited financial loan to Soichiro's family business. So, perhaps they really weren't best friends after all.
Soichiro found Sumi trying to sell herself to avoid getting kicked out of their rented house. Sumi had a lot of children depending on her and she cannot afford to raise them on the streets. Soichiro 'bought' her and married her thinking he could use her to create a scandal. He arranged scenes to get Nozomu and Sumi close. Eventually, Nozomu did fall for Sumi hard and wanted to run away with her. Sumi, on the other hand, was having second thoughts because she IS married to Soichiro. When Sumi tried to run back, Nozomu tied her up and let a big hotel fire threaten to swallow them together.
It was during this time that Soichiro realized that Sumi has grown close to him as well and ran to get her back. He found Sumi and Nozomu in the middle of a fire and saved them both. Nozomu's father was deeply embarrassed and appreciated Soichiro's saving his son that he let Ashida Properties get an unlimited loan agreement. In fine, Soichiro's plan worked albeit there exists some complication - Soichiro couldn't help but fall for Sumi.
Nozomu married one month after the fire and would seem to have moved on. During the marriage ceremony however, when he kissed his bride, he looked at Sumi. This would be the harbinger of doom.
Nozomu had plans on his own. He had decided to have Sumi whatever it takes. He was able to get a position as some sort of Auditor from the Iijuin Bank and assigned at the Ashida Properties. In other words, Nozomu managed to be at the same business place as Soichiro and Sumi.
Through some underhanded tactics, Nozomu eventually managed to get the highest position at the Ashida Properties, replacing Soichiro.
Soichiro became poor as he chose Sumi over the business. During this time, Nozomu made their lives difficult to get Sumi to go to him in exchange for her family's peace.
When Sumi and her family were forced to leave their rented home and Soichiro got sick, Sumi voluntarily went to Nozomu, who started an annulment of his marriage.
It simply wasn't Nozomu's fate to marry Sumi however as it turns out that Sumi is no ordinary girl.
Nozomu had a younger sister kidnapped many years ago. Although his family paid the ransom, Aika was never returned. Aika turned out to be Sumi. Sumi is Nozomu's younger sister.
This would have been enough a reason to stop Nozomu's madness over Sumi but it didn't affect Nozumo's obsession at all. He STILL wanted to marry Sumi.
At the altar, Soichiro crashed the wedding and tried to stop it. Nozomu's father supported Soichiro and announced to the guests that Sumi is Aika. There was so much disturbance that day that the wedding didn't push through. Soichiro finally got Sumi back.
In one lonely scene, Nozomu could be seen being approached by his wife, Miu.
At the end, Sumi set up an elementary school that is free to the masses and had a child with Soichiro. Nozomu, on the other hand, chose to stay far away from Sumi and is expecting a child with his wife Miu.
That's how the manga plot went. Phew.
And oh, for those asking if there are ehem scenes in it, yes. Yes, there are. (grin)
