CHAPTER 66:

Summary:

"Why didn't you save me?" Sheila asks Livius.

"Ah..." Livius uttered, shocked.

"Livi, you said when you became an adult, you will take me away from here. I was so happy since the King fell in love with me, locked me up in the castle, and forced me to be his concubine. I have always wanted to return to the grasslands that I miss so much. I was waiting for you to grant my wish."

"Ah..."

"I was not shown mercy by anyone."

"Stop..." Livius whispers.

"I died a cruel death," Sheila continues as she holds Livius face.

"No..."

In Livius' mind, he remembers it really well. How Sheila would look forlorn but still manages to keep a positive facial expression. She would find time to try other things while being trapped in the castle. They pass time together. Sheila would even sing him his favorite lullaby, the rain song, and Livius promised Sheila that one day, they will see rain together. During that period, there were many attempts on their lives because of the King's opponents. Because of this, Livius studied self-defense. He had no interest for the throne. However, he became the top student among his half-siblings. This did not escape the King's attention. He thus offered the throne to his youngest, Livius. During this time, passing the throne to a child of a concubine is unheard of. Pure hatred was directed at Sheila and Livius. Attempts on their lives also increased.

There was one particular time when Livius struck a fever that lasted for five days. The King and Sheila didn't know whether it was from a poison or not. However, the King conforted Sheila, saying that he will not let Livius die and touched her cheek as he said so. Livius could see what was happening, despite how weak as he was. When he saw his father touch Sheila's cheek, he screamed in his mind not to touch her. During this time, Livius also thought him as the successor to the throne means Sheila will be forever trapped in the castle. If he didn't survive the fever, maybe Sheila would have been free. He cried in his bed. Maybe if he wasn't born, Sheila would not be in that situation.

He could not save her.

Livius was already lying on the ground as he remembered the past. Sheila was hovering above him.

"That's right," Sheila said. "You couldn't save me. But don't worry. I don't hold it against you. From now on, we can always be together. There are no scary or painful things in this place. You don't have to worry. The person you wanted to see the most is holding you. So rest assured and sleep."

Livius stared straight up. "The person I wanted to see the most... That certainly was true..."

A vague figure flashed in his mind.

"But someone..." Livius thought.

"Close your eyes," Sheila soothingly said.

"...someone is calling me," Livius thought as he closed his eyes.

At that moment, Sheila bared her teeth near Livius' neck.

Suddenly, Livius opened his eyes. The person who was calling him. Yes, he remembers!

"Ah wait!" Livius interjected as he lifts up a necklace in his hand. "That [is...]!"

But as quick as he remembered it, the memory suddenly faded away. Who was it again?

"You're a troublesome child. How can I make you sleep?" Sheila asks.

"Ah...my head is fuzzy again," Livius thought as he grapples with his memory.

"A song... sing me a song, Sheila," Livius said. "That rain song lullaby."

"I don't know that song," Sheila replied.

"You know this one," Livius said as he began to sing it.

What was the next one again, Livius thought as he continued to sing the rain song.

"Livi, that is enough," Sheila said.

"Be quiet," Livius responded and continued to sing. He noted that the falling flower petals look like rain.

"Livi, stop," Sheila repeated.

"Quiet!" Livius said as he tried to remember what rain looks like. It was cold and unyielding. More. Livius focused and suddenly, Nike's face light up in his mind.

He remembered Nike singing the rain song as rain fell to the ground. He quickly shot up and stabbed his foot with his dagger.

"It hurts," Livius winced. "Seriously, thanks to that I've woken up but this is my punishment. For even for just a moment..." Livius looked straight at Sheila. "I forgot about Nike."

"Livi, why?" Sheila looked horrified and held his face again. "Why are you rejecting me? If you don't run away now, you will have a hard life, won't you?"

"That's right. Probably," Livius thought. "Until now, the things I've done have made my life painful." Livius introspected once more. "I don't think I could welcome the end with a calm feeling." Death. "Even thinking about it makes me shudder." That's why he was always, always running away. He allowed the wounds to build up in order to forget this painful existence. So many time he wished he could return to those days with Sheila. He would gave given everything and anything to turn back time.

But then he met Nike.

Because of that, the days with Sheila was gone. Because of that, even with the past and all the pain of losing Sheila, it was all negated. Now given the choice, he will choose a painful life with Nike than a peaceful life with Sheila.

"Therefore," Sheila said as she wrapped her hands around Livius' neck. "This is where we part."

Suddenly, Sheila froze. Livius struck her in the abdomen with his scabbard. Tears streamed down Livius' face. Sheila smiled and then collapsed, exposing wings at her back.

It wasn't Sheila. It was a huge golden eagle.

The owl, Shikanda, got back and perched on Livius' shoulder.

"Don't worry," Livius said. "I didn't kill it."

Some of the golden feathers fell as if it was autumn, reminding Livius once again about the time when he, as a kid, pointed to Sheila the beautiful leaves one autumn day. Sheila had given him one of those leaves.

Livius held a feather in his hand as tears flowed down. He pressed the feather to his lips and said, "Thank you... Mother."

In the meantime, at the castle, Kara notices that Nike, who is still asleep, has tears falling down on her face.

At the entrance of the cave, Jishin patiently waited for Livius' return. Suddenly, a smaller opening appeared right beside the cave.

It was Livius. He made it.

"You're safe! You got out!" Jishin exclaimed.

"I'm not safe. I had a terrible time!" Livius said.

It was then that Jishin noticed that Livius' eyes were extremely puffy.

"Are you okay with that face?" Jishin asks. "As I thought. Is it swollen?"

"It's not injured!" Livius says. "Don't look at me!"

Jishin then says that if Livius saw the golden bird then it is natural. It's the beast of the forest and uses the miasma and the memories of the people. In addition, it can control the miasma and show people the person they want to see the most. Because of that, people who are lured in does not return. That is why only those who decides to live in the present can return. (You know, for a person who never even tried seeing the beast and considering that no one allegedly has ever returned from the heart of the forest, Jishin sure knows a lot.)

"You did well, Livius," Jishin praises. It was then that Livius admit that he really hasn't accepted what has happened before and sought revenge for Sheila. But now, he can say that he can live in the present...without Sheila.

Livius then asks Jishin that they return to Cassandra's place now but Jishin corrects him.

"It should be going back to the castle to where Nike is."

Back at Cassandra's house, Cassandra just learned that the priests know about Livius asking help from her.

"This is not good," Cassandra said. "If the priests know, my hands will be tied."
