CHAPTER 71: A Wintry Day

Summary:

"It's cold these days!" a castle maid exclaimed as she looked around outside.

"It's getting frosty now," an older woman replied as she busied up with the chores. "A year sure passed by so quickly."

The forest thieves already left the day before and the castle has become quiet. The two maids were still talking when they observed Nike's bedroom door left open. Just peeping through behind the door is a hand.

It was Nike and she was laying flat on the floor.

"Someone please call Cassandra-sama!" one of the maids cried.

Nike crept to the younger of the maids and croaked, "No, it's not that. You see... my stomach... is empty." Her stomach promptly growled.

Bowls of porridge were immediately sent to Nike's bedroom.

Livius watched amused as Nike gobble up the food, bowl after bowl after bowl.    

"I'm impressed," Livius commented. "Even for someone who is sick and not moving, despite having fed porridge out of consideration,  you're quickly back to how you were."

"That's because I haven't eaten for ten days," Nike replied with food in her mouth. "My stomach is empty so it can't be helped."

Livius took a wayward morsel of food from Nike's right cheek and ate it. "I can't understand what you're saying but if you can eat that much, you're healthy now."

Nike blushed as she watched Livius place the morsel in his mouth.

Sensing that Nike suddenly became uncomfortable, Livius asks, "What's wrong?"

"No-nothing," Nike answers.

"Why are you staring at me? Are you getting charmed by me?" Livius teases as he starts creeping towards her on the bed.

"No, it's not like that and why are you on the bed!" Nike nervously replies. 

"It might be hard to eat so I thought I should help," Livius answers.

"But there's no need to take your clothes off!" Nike points out.

"Oops, my habit," Livius nonchalantly says.

"Hey Chibius, that's enough," Cassandra says as she enters the room with Jishin. Nike jumps towards Cassandra and Cassandra berates Livius. Cassandra tells him that Nike is still sick and that the detoxification is not yet complete. That is why she and Jishin are going to be staying at the castle to observe Nike.

Three days after Nike woke up, Livius had told her about his travels, the forest, Jishin, and Cassandra.

"Nice to meet you," Nike says to Cassandra as she notes that Cassandra has a voluptuous body.

Jishin meets Nike's eyes and Jishin greets her. Nike chuckles and wonders why she feels like the air around them is weird when they are meeting for the first time.           

Nike also felt that Livius seem to have grown up in a place she doesn't know and made a lot of friends. Maybe she ate too much and that's why she's feeling that way, she thinks.

The priests have been wandering around the palace now since Livius has tightened his rule. He is still the one taking care of the owl, feeding him milk and water.

During this time, Bard is nowhere to be seen at the palace. He was busy disturbing Violetta (remember her? One of Bard's special someone and the one who tried to alert Bard that Ursula, the princess out to get vengeance, was back) at the pub, tightly hugging her from behind even when she is busy with her chores and refusing to let her go. Violetta's sister even suggested cleaning the floor with Bard as the mop. 

While Bard is busy helping with cutting the vegetables, it is revealed that he is sad that Livius seem to be even mature than him now. Livius solved all the problems at the castle when he got there. Bard also tells Violetta that Cassandra being a concubine is just a ruse. The problem though is that it is still the most talked about topic in the castle and does not look like it would be dying anytime soon. Bard wonders how Livius will handle that. Cassandra tells him that it's usually the Prime Minister's problem (meaning Bard's problem). Bard mused quietly.

Bard then goes to Landreth-sama, without telling Livius. Bard asks that the priests reconsider the marriage between Livius and Nike. Landreth-sama tells him that the marriage will remain annulled. The official annulment will take place tomorrow. Bard is shocked and immediately knew he had to do something. He offers Landreth-sama his position as Prime Minister in exchange for the marriage approval.

Everyone is shocked.

Bard gives Landreth-sama a list. He will let anyone on the list take over his position, he explains. Landreth-sama merely has to choose any name in that list.

"Landreth-sama, we did it," a priest tells him. "With this, we will attain power and glory!"

"I don't understand," Landreth-sama suddenly says to Bard. "Is their marriage this important? Why do you devote so much to them?"

"If the marriage isn't much worth, I wouldn't do it," Bard explains. "The king is of immense potential and is necessary to this country and the world."

"What about the princess? Does the King marrying her have the same value?" Landreth asks again.

At this point, Bard starts to get nervous. "O-of course."

"The worth in making rain fall?" Landreth questions. "Is there anything other than that the princess can do?"

"It's not like that. There is definitely some worth," Bard tries to answer. "Erm... you see... Nike in politics... Nope, actually there's no use..."

It was then that Bard was doing all these because of his feelings for Livius and Nike. Bard has never experienced love, even in his family. That is why he wants to protect the two and let them continue loving each other. He believes they will grow stronger together. He wants to see what will happen next.

Landreth-sama finally relents and promises to reopen the matter on the marriage between Livius and Nike.

As Bard was about to leave though, the main door suddenly became rowdier. When Bard takes a look, he is surprised by what he sees.

It was his brother, Spilaari. Behind him is Aristes.

The scene then cuts to Livius and Nike. Livius was telling Nike about the time he allegedly cut off the head of a monster and that Jishin blushed in front of him, impressed about how strong Livius is. Livius doesn't tell Nike that Jishin actually blushed because he was then dressed as Bianca.

When Livius had to leave, Nike asks if he could continue the story tonight. Livius tells her no. 

"It's difficult for me to come over tonight. Besides," Livius tries to explain. "I thought it's about time for me to sleep alone. Erm... because... it's about time... There's lots of complicated things that will happen... I'm also older now..." Livius says as his face reddens.

Nike understand and blushes. At the same time, she looked lonely as Livius can now sleep all by himself now.

Nike then suggests that she accompanies him as he walk back to his office. When they got outside to the garden, Nike is amazed that winter has already arrived at their place. Livius holds Nike's hand and they start to walk in the garden maze. In the middle of the garden however, there worked the gardener and a maid.

"Waiting for spring and withstanding winter, this endurance," the gardener says as he pushes a cart. "It calms my heart after my wife found out I've been cheating on her for three years."

"Geez... what are you talking so much for!" the maid shouted as she swept the grounds.

"I'm helping you already so hurry up and finish up!" the maid said angrily. "The one cheating is you right. I pity your wife!"                         

"Even so, I think it can't be helped because guys are like that," the gardener says. "Even the king brought a concubine."

"I'm saying..." the maid starts only to be cut off. Standing in front of her is Nike.

"Con...cu...bine?" Nike repeats as Livius' face is stricken with panic. "What is that?"
